Teen Steroid Use Hits All-Time Lows in 2021

By Rick Collins, Esq.

The lockdowns and closures imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have hurt small businesses and the overall economy. But one of the positive effects has been an unprecedented, whopping decline in adolescent use of illicit drugs, according to the Monitoring the Future study.

In 2021, the percentage of teens who had ever used any illicit drug other than marijuana declined by over 25%. Significant reductions in reported use occurred across a wide range of drugs, including cocaine, hallucinogens and nonmedical use of amphetamines, tranquilizers and prescription opioids. Specific to anabolic steroids, look at these charts plotting reported lifetime and last 12 months usage.

“These declines are an unintended consequence of the pandemic,” said Richard Miech, principal investigator of the study and research professor at the Institute for Social Research. “Among the many disruptions adolescents have experienced as a result of the pandemic are disruptions in their ability to get drugs, disruptions in their ability to use drugs outside of parental supervision, and disruptions in peer groups that encourage drug use.”

Of course, the good news is tempered with some bad news. Teens reported increases in mental health issues since the start of the pandemic, including anxiety, anger and loneliness.

Every year since 1975, professors at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research have conducted nationally representative surveys of students in grades 8, 10 and 12, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. I’ve covered the results in several of my “Busted!” columns over the years. Check out all the 2021 highlights here:
